A Thoughtful Christmas: Mindful Spending & Meaningful Gift Ideas

A few years ago I made a suggestion to the family about the concept of purchasing gifts which offered tangible benefits or were of a more substantial quality. This didn't refer to higher price tags certainly; the ideas was more about a selective shopping process such as purchasing handmade products, merchandise which helps a cause, or items found in locally-owned businesses which support real people.

There seems to be no shortage of ways to spend more meaningfully, and if the idea of "more stuff" doesn't appeal to you there are plenty of ways to support area charities or assist good organizations. I can't tell you how many articles of clothing are in my closet which came from local nonprofit organizations, animal rescues and fundraisers held where I live, but I wear them knowing the proceeds went to support worthy causes.

Take time and consider ways to enjoy the season by keeping the concept of "less is more" in mind. Rather than stressing over an all-day shopping affair, why not pop into smaller neighborhood shops where you can chat with the owner, find unique items and enjoy a more personal approach?

To be honest, spending at home with independent retailers does actually help your community more. So maybe the big box stores aren't such a bargain after all.....

Discover more attractive options this season. Invite family and friends to join in visiting local artists, setting a gift limit guideline and seeking out better choices.

A gift certificate to a special shop filled with locally-crafted products is always in good taste - and supports local makers.

Here is an excellent reminder that our decisions help to uplift and strengthen the local neighborhood.

Warning: you may quite possibly fall into a lifestyle of choosing more carefully and seeking out special ways of spending that you enjoy more. I know I did - and I love it!

I hope this post offers you some different ideas about what "holiday spending" may actually do for others, and I'm sure you'll come up with some great suggestions of your own. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

Sincerely,
Andrea Baumann
