Better Business Communication Day

Today is Better Business Communication Day, a topic we would probably agree is one of the most essential elements in our world today. One of the first thoughts which came to my mind was wondering which areas could be most improved upon.

"Communication is a significant skill that managers and other leaders and key employees need to work most effectively with colleagues in the workplace. It is a fundamental building block that allows the employee to successfully and productively interact with coworkers and customers." Source

Where does the biggest gap in communication happen? I believe it's between layers of corporate structure; not quite as noticeably at the top layers where people are in the same environment/office space, but in the distance between upper management and everyday workers, production lines and daily operations. Increasing the quality of workplace communication benefits employees by making them feel like part of the team, facilitates understanding of company message, goals and operations. While there are plenty of other facets of communication to delve into, the goal of building better relationships between layers of a company strikes me as one of the most important ones to notice.

"Employees who feel respected by their employers and are engaged at work are 87 percent less likely to leave their organization and seek new employment. Yet only 38 percent of employees say their company treats them with respect.” Source: Why Better Business Communication Matters and How to Improve It

What are three simple things which can improve communication?

• Offer clearly defined objectives

"We could all do a better job with our business communication: less email (and email that is more to the point), fewer meetings (and meetings that are more to the point), and more real-time interpersonal communication (i.e., conversation) with colleagues." Celebrate Better Business Communication Day with your Hourly Workers
