"What Is An Independent Business Owner?"

This is a repost of something I scribbled down on a torn piece of paper one night; exhausted from a fourteen hour day - and yet magically at 10:15pm, restored and renewed by the love and support of my wonderful and loyal customers.

The people across the country who have been behind the counter for decades; the ones who open a small shop each morning and then sweep down the floors of the family grocery store at the end of the day; the individuals who have greeted countless visitors and customers in their lifetime; they are the true heart and soul of America. Their stories are woven into the colorful patterns of our lives and intertwined with the history of our communities, and a loss of such an establishment is mourned when suddenly, one day, they are no more. We cannot overlook the contributions of such individuals nor can we take them for granted, and above all, we must remember to always make them a part of our lives; celebrated, enjoyed and supported.

• We are the people who operate your favorite places, hometown restaurants and beloved shops all across the country,

• We are more than just a face behind a counter; we sponsor the Little League team, holding a benefit for a neighbor in need, provide our parking lot and lobby for civic groups to set up sales and fundraisers,

• We've opened up our shop upon request, after hours, because you were delayed at work and still desperately need one of our famous cakes for an important family celebration,

• We take the flyers and announcements for upcoming events, fire department dinners and lost pets, and place them in our windows, because we have no "corporate policy" which would ban such things,

• We've been known to stop off at your house on the way home to bring you the special gift you ordered but couldn’t leave work on time to pick it up,

• We greet you at church, teach your children, donate boxes of snacks to the troops serving overseas, and bring a surprise cake to your mom's 90th birthday party,

• We've been known to close up the shop an hour early so we could gather at the airport with our our and welcome home a soldier from deployment, make the time to attend a prayer service following a tragedy, and during the annual Veterans Day parade we stand proudly stand with you and wave our American flag,

• We hire the babies that you carried into our shop years ago, now grown into teenagers, for their first "real" job,

• Our bakery displays a simple handwritten sign explaining that we buy ingredients from the family farm down the road,

• We are the ones that “catch you next time” when your child comes in for an ice cream cone but has forgotten to bring money,

• We've cried with you when a visit brings the sad news of your father’s passing; toasted the announcement of your daughter's wedding; met, held and admired your very first grandchild,

• We live and breathe the opportunity to rise again each morning and reopen the family business; the diner; the hardware store; the auto repair shop. Our dedication is evident in the work we do, and it is here that we live and love and grow,

• It would be impossible to image that a shopping trip to the big box stores and chains could, in any manner, hold a candle to what our humble establishment provides.

Our community is us and we are it. THANK YOU for your support.”
